Building Homes on a Foundation of Faith

Heartland Habitat for Humanity exists to

  • Eliminate poverty and substandard housing worldwide,
  • Build or renovate houses in partnership with families who qualify for homeownership based on three criteria: need, a willingness to partner with HHFH and an ability to repay a no-interest mortgage,
  • Work with people of all faiths and people of no faith,
  • Sell houses at no profit, with no interest charged.

Habitat for Humanity International History
Founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. The organization has built and renovated over 200,000 houses worldwide since 1976.

Habitat is a worldwide, grassroots movement. There are more than 2,100 active affiliates in 100 countries, including all 50 states of the United States, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico. HFHI headquarters, located in Americus, Ga., provides information, training, support and other services to Habitat affiliates worldwide.

Heartland Habitat for Humanity
Heartland Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to build simple, decent homes and communities in partnership with God’s people in need, while following biblical principles. Established in 2006, Heartland Habitat was formed by the merger of Kaw Valley Habitat for Humanity and Northland Habitat for Humanity. Since 1987, the two Habitat affiliates have built over 215 homes in Wyandotte, Leavenworth and Johnson counties in Kansas and Clay and Platte counties in Missouri.

How We Do It
Heartland Habitat for Humanity builds homes using volunteer labor, donated funds and donated materials. The homes are sold to qualifying partner families with no profit and affordable 0% interest loans. Mortgage payments are invested back into the program, helping to build additional new homes across Heartland’s target areas. Homeowners are required to invest 350 hours of sweat equity in the construction of their homes, partnering with other families and completing homeowner education classes. Approximately 70% of Heartland Habitat’s construction is completed by volunteers. Much of the building material is donated or provided at reduced cost.

Family Selection
Heartland Habitat's family selection committee considers applicants' level of need, their willingness to become partners in the Habitat program and their ability to repay the no-interest loan. Heartland Habitat follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing homeowner families.

If your family, or a family you know, is in need of decent, affordable housing, please check the homeowner information page for information on the availability, size, costs, and sweat equity requirements for Heartland Habitat houses, as well as information on the application process.

Donations
Donations are used as designated by the donor. Gifts received that are designated to a specific building project are forwarded to that project. Any undesignated gifts are used where most needed. Heartland Habitat's most recent audited financial statement is available upon request.

Management
Heartland Habitat for Humanity's board of directors determines policy and monitors operations. Board members are dedicated volunteers who are deeply concerned about the problems of poverty housing in our community. Heartland Habitat operates with an administrative staff, assisted by a core group of clerical and support employees and supplemented by long-term and short-term volunteers.

Events that help build better futures

To help place low-income families in affordable homes, Heartland Habitat for Humanity must always be in a fund-raising mode. It’s one big reason why we sponsor special events year-round. They also provide us with the opportunity to publicly honor donors and volunteers who are so critical to our mission.
