Become a Heartland Habitat Homeowner
Heartland Habitat for Humanity pledges to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. Heartland Habitat encourages and supports an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, age, marital status or sources of income.
You can be considered for a Heartland Habitat home if you meet the following conditions:
- You have a need. Your present housing is not adequate, and you’re unable to obtain adequate housing through other conventional means. Lack of adequate housing may include problems with the present structure; water, electrical, sewage service, or heating systems; and/or an inability to meet city property maintenance standards.
- You are willing to become a partner. Your willingness to partner with Heartland Habitat to complete all program requirements, including 350 hours of sweat equity is required. 'Sweat Equity' includes 150 hours spent building your own home, 150 hours by friends and family spent buidling your home and others, and 50 hours spent in homeowner education courses.
- You have the ability to pay. Your family must have a steady income that falls within 30-60% of the Annual Gross Income Guidelines (see table below). You must have a complete two years of employment history and have been at your current place of employment for at least six months.
