Volunteers: The Heart of Heartland Habitat

Volunteers drive Heartland Habitat for Humanity. Heartland Habitat welcomes people from all walks of life to join in to build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with God and families in need. Don’t have construction experience of building skills? You’re not alone. The vast majority of Heartland Habitat's volunteers are inexperienced in construction and home repair, but by working side-by-side with the family who will live in the house, volunteers experience for themselves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of homeownership.

Volunteers contribute more than just muscle. Creativity, strategy and technical skills are among the many invaluable traits volunteers bring to the organization. With a minimal staff, Heartland Habitat for Humanity depends upon volunteer committees for support with projects like Family Selection, Family Support, Special Events, Faith Relations and Speakers Bureau.

Help build homes, assist in the office, serve on committees and help with special projects that benefit the organization. Time commitments vary; some dedicate every day of the week. Others spend just a few hours each year. As a volunteer for Heartland Habitat for Humanity, you choose. All positions are a tremendous help that result, directly or indirectly, in the construction of simple, decent homes.

There are two ways to sign up to become a volunteer:

1.) Online Registration and Orientation — The process is simple, takes about 10 minutes and doesn’t have to be completed at one time. By completing either the Individual or Group Registration and Orientation online, you have immediate access to  construction and other volunteer opportunities.

2.) In-Person Registration and Orientation — If you have a group of volunteers, your group can complete the Group Online Registration and Orientation process, or you can contact the Volunteer Coordinator to arrange in-person group orientation at your location.

Volunteer & Supporter Spotlight

Timothy Dorr & Family

Heartland Habitat for Humanity is dependent upon volunteers who are willing to serve in a variety of capacities, whether it's on-site at a home build, serving at ReStore, or helping to build awareness and raise funds in their own circle of influence. This holiday season, Tim Dorr and family went above and beyond by spreading holiday cheer through their Christmas lights extravaganza and raising funds for Heartland Habitat.

It took months of planning for the Dorr's holiday lights display to become a reality. The building, sequencing and installation are chalked full of details and logistics. The end result was a 13-minute animated lights display set to holiday music.

"We're very pleased that our display is bringing the joy of the season to so many," said Dorr.

The family placed a donation box for the lights spectators who wanted to give a little back for this display of joy. As of December 28, the Dorrs have raised over $1,500, and Heartland Habitat is so grateful. The display opened on November 26 and continues until January 1.

"I didn't really know what to expect when we decided to collect donations, but am very pleased with everyone's acceptance and generosity," said Dorr.

To help place low-income families in affordable homes, Heartland Habitat for Humanity must always be in a fund-raising mode. It’s one big reason why we sponsor special events year-round.
