Volunteers: The Heart of Heartland Habitat

Volunteers drive Heartland Habitat for Humanity. Heartland Habitat welcomes people from all walks of life to join in to build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with God and families in need. Don’t have construction experience of building skills? You’re not alone. The vast majority of Heartland Habitat's volunteers are inexperienced in construction and home repair, but by working side-by-side with the family who will live in the house, volunteers experience for themselves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of homeownership.

Volunteers contribute more than just muscle. Creativity, strategy and technical skills are among the many invaluable traits volunteers bring to the organization. With a minimal staff, Heartland Habitat for Humanity depends upon volunteer committees for support with projects like Family Selection, Family Support, Special Events, Faith Relations and Speakers Bureau.

Help build homes, assist in the office, serve on committees and help with special projects that benefit the organization. Time commitments vary; some dedicate every day of the week. Others spend just a few hours each year. As a volunteer for Heartland Habitat for Humanity, you choose. All positions are a tremendous help that result, directly or indirectly, in the construction of simple, decent homes.

There are two ways to sign up to become a volunteer:

1.) Online Registration and Orientation — The process is simple, takes about 10 minutes and doesn’t have to be completed at one time. By completing either the Individual or Group Registration and Orientation online, you have immediate access to  construction and other volunteer opportunities.

2.) In-Person Registration and Orientation — If you have a group of volunteers, your group can complete the Group Online Registration and Orientation process, or you can contact the Volunteer Coordinator to arrange in-person group orientation at your location.

A special "Thank You" to all of our donors and volunteers.

New Landings Job Club

New Landings Job Club (NLJC) was formed in April 2009 by a team of professionals affected by the poor economic climate. This group of corporate professionals decided to take a positive approach to their season of unemployment by using their time and talents for the benefit of Heartland Habitat for Humanity.

When a Heartland Habitat staff member spoke about opportunities at one of the group's meetings, NLJC members got excited about volunteering with the organization. "It just felt like this was something we needed to do," said Angela Thurman, NLJC spokesperson. "We had all these people with time and skills. It seemed like a great way to give back to the community during our job search."

What began as a day of service in October 2009 turned into an ongoing partnership with Heartland Habitat. NLJC members continued volunteering on-site, working side-by-side with Heartland Habitat's homeowners, and even sharing the lunches they had catered on their project day with the surrounding neighbors. The group is looking forward to working with Heartland Habitat again this year, and is currently conducting fundraisers and planning their project days for this build season.

"Volunteering with Heartland Habitat was a very positive experience. It felt so good to set aside our own troubles and focus on someone else. We loved it and can't wait to do it again," said Thurman. "It was the hardest fun we'll ever have."

Events that help build better futures

To help place low-income families in affordable homes, Heartland Habitat for Humanity must always be in a fund-raising mode. It’s one big reason why we sponsor special events year-round. They also provide us with the opportunity to publicly honor donors and volunteers who are so critical to our mission.
