Volunteers: The Heart of Heartland Habitat
Volunteers drive Heartland Habitat for Humanity. Heartland Habitat welcomes people from all walks of life to join in to build simple, decent, affordable houses in
partnership with God and families in need. Don’t have construction experience of building skills? You’re not alone. The vast majority of Heartland Habitat's volunteers are inexperienced in construction and home repair, but by working side-by-side with the family who will live in the house, volunteers experience for themselves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of homeownership.
Volunteers contribute more than just muscle. Creativity, strategy and technical skills are among the many invaluable traits volunteers bring to the organization. With a minimal staff, Heartland Habitat for Humanity depends upon volunteer committees for support with projects like Family Selection, Family Support, Special Events, Faith Relations and Speakers Bureau.
Help build homes, assist in the office, serve on committees and help with special projects that benefit the organization. Time commitments vary; some dedicate every day of the week. Others spend just a few hours each year. As a volunteer for Heartland Habitat for Humanity, you choose. All positions are a tremendous help that result, directly or indirectly, in the construction of simple, decent homes.
There are two ways to sign up to become a volunteer:
1.) Online Registration and Orientation — The process is simple, takes about 10 minutes and doesn’t have to be completed at one time. By completing either the Individual or Group Registration and Orientation online, you have immediate access to construction and other volunteer opportunities.
2.) In-Person Registration and Orientation — If you have a group of volunteers, your group can complete the Group Online Registration and Orientation process, or you can contact the Volunteer Coordinator to arrange in-person group orientation at your location.

Volunteer & Supporter Spotlight
Sharon Myers
Sharon Myers describes herself as a "construction junkie." In both her childhood and her adult years, she lived in homes where do-it-yourself projects were encouraged. Thanks to her involvement with Heartland Habitat for Humanity, not only does she have the opportunity to polish her construction and home repair skills, she also has the opportunity to give back through meaningful community involvement.
"There's a real sense of personal satisfaction when you get the chance to experience new challenges, bring your own skills to the table and learn new skills," said Myers. "No matter how old you are, it's still worthwhile to learn new things."
Myers has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for almost nine years, and with Heartland Habitat for the last year. She can be found on-site every Tuesday and Thursday. She loves the physicality of the work, as well as the opportunity to work in various neighborhoods. She also raves about Heartland Habitat's staff and crew, citing how organized and efficient they are.
Ultimately, it is her belief in helping to provide housing opportunities for those who would not otherwise have them that drives Myers.
"There is such a return when you see the finished work," she said. "When I'm tired and sweaty at the end of the day, I feel like I've really done something."

Events that help build better futures
To help place low-income families in affordable homes, Heartland Habitat for Humanity must always be in a fund-raising mode. It’s one big reason why we sponsor special events year-round. They also provide us with the opportunity to publicly honor donors and volunteers who are so critical to our mission.
