Ten years ago, Sharon Turner read a portion of Isaiah 44:28, which reads, "...Thy foundation shall be laid." It was then that she began to have faith that one day, she and her family would have a home of their own. But, her journey wasn't easy. It was only through perseverance and faith that she found her way to Heartland Habitat.
Sharon and her children dealt with transitional homelessness for approximately 10 years. Though she kept fairly steady employment, they bounced between various family members, shelters and transitional housing programs. All the while, Sharon clung to what she believes was a promise from God: that He would help provide a home of their own. When she returned to the Kansas City area to be with her mother in 2009, she learned of Heartland Habitat’s work providing safe, decent homes for local families in need. She submitted her homeowner application, hoping and praying that this was the answer she had been waiting for.
Today, Sharon and two of her children, Ronal, 12, and Faith, 10, are the proud new owners of a Heartland Habitat home. After having successfully completed Heartland Habitat's rigorous application process, including 350 hours of sweat equity and homeowner education classes, Sharon qualified for a no-interest mortgage loan. They moved into their Heartland Habitat home in Kansas City, Kansas in October.
According to Habitat for Humanity International, approximately one third of all Americans struggle with inadequate housing. Through the work of Heartland Habitat, local families like the Turners are receiving help for their housing needs. As a result, more stable homes are being provided for children; families are experiencing improvement in their health, physical safety and security; educational and job prospects are increasing; and families are growing in their sense of dignity and pride.
Sharon testifies to those impacts in the life of her own family. She works processing lab results for a local clinical laboratory, and her children are well-adjusted. "We're home now," she said. "My kids are so happy, and I am so happy for them. My children are in a nice home, and they are proud of where they live."
You can help lay the foundation for more local families in need. Your gift of financial support will help Heartland Habitat continue to make the dreams of homeownership come true.
